Evidence mounts of atrocities by Libyan “rebels”

From World Socialist Website
29 August 2011
A series of reports from journalists on the ground in Tripoli have provided evidence of mass killings by the NATO-backed forces in the Libyan civil war. These reports, which appear in publications largely supportive of the US-NATO intervention to overthrow the regime of Muammar Gaddafi, further expose the fraudulent claim that the imperialist war against Libya is driven by humanitarian motives and the desire to protect civilian lives.
The Washington Post carried a prominent report Saturday, headlined, “Revenge Killings Mount in Libya, Extrajudicial Attacks by Rebels Cast Shadow Over New Freedom.” The headline refers to the contradiction between the claims by the National Transitional Council (NTC), the new NATO-backed regime in Libya, as well as the Obama administration that what is taking place is a new birth of freedom in Libya and the reality of politically directed and in some cases racially motivated slaughter.

So Much For American Free Enterprise

So it's come down to this. Selling lemonade for 10 cents (1/10 of 1 Dollar) on the grounds of the US Capitol, the supposed citadel of "freedom and democracy", leads to arrest. Wasn't the U$A the country of "free enterprise"? Oh well. Another myth of the American Dream shattered and discredited.

British Jealous of America’s Savage Police

Transcript of a Black Agenda Radio Commentary by Glen Ford.

In the wake of rebellions that spread to much of urban Britain, the ruling Conservative Party government is not only sounding like their racist American cousins, they were at least toying with the idea of importing William Bratton, the former police chief of New York, Los Angeles and Boston, to put the fear of the law into the U.K.’s darker residents. On first examination, it seems counterintuitive that anyone would look to the United States for role models in the criminal justice arena. The U.S. is by far the most violent among the wealthy nations of the world. Gangs are endemic, the U.S. is the drug marketplace of the planet. Guns are everywhere, both legal and illegal. It’s a scary place to live. What could the British possibly find to envy about America, when it comes to law and order?

Resistance Against Deportations In Austria

The following is a report from Antira Wien (Anti-Racist Vienna) on political and social resistance to racist immigration and asylum laws and practices in Austria. Despite the growing electoral strength of the far-right in Austria, many Austrians, including municipal and provincial politicians, along with refugees and immigrants themselves are resisting. The text has been roughly translated from the original German.

2011

August 4th 2011- A familiy from Franking, in Upper Austria, was first picked up and then placed in a detention center in Vienna. Neither the father’s attempted suicide nor an attempted escape nor protests could prevent the deportation, which was carried forth the next day. (no-racism.net/article/3876)
August 2nd 2011 – NGO’s and Green Party politicians critisised the planned deportation of five families, including 8 adults and 15 children from Carinthia to Chechenia, Armenia and Dagestan. As all remedies have been exhausted, the individual struggles for the right of residence shall be at least supported by public pressure. (kleinezeitung.at)
Family D. from Rohrbach have been supported by the local parish in their struggle for a residence permit. Hundreds of people were showed their solidarity by participating and signing petitions. An Upper Austrian plattform, including different initiatives which campaign for the right of residency, called an action for the22nd of July 2011 to show solidarity with the family by sending protest letters to politicians. Youth sentenced to years in jail for posting Facebook notices during British riots

From WSWS
By Robert Steven
The state clampdown against working class youth in Britain continues unabated. On Tuesday, crown court judges in England handed down long jail sentences to two young men for posting comments on Facebook.
Jordan Blackshaw, 20, and Perry Sutcliffe-Keenan, 22, were not involved in any disturbances. But at Chester Crown Court they were sentenced to four years imprisonment for “intentionally encouraging another to assist the commission of an indictable offence under sections 44 and 46 of the Serious Crime Act 2007”.

Public Enemy-Fear of a Black Planet

Stop The Race War!

It appears that the front lines of Global War One are on the home front. As I mentioned previously, the world is in the midst of serious racial conflict. This summer has seen racial strife, violence and massacres not seen since the 1980s. The causes of this unrest are intimately connected to the breakdown of the world capitalist system. As in the 1930s, the current collapse of the economic order leads inevitably to war between states. However, unlike the 1930s, today we are witnessing racial conflict in countries all around the world. These race wars are the result of the deteriorating living standards for the masses of people. Rather than uniting against the capitalist class as a whole, the middle and working classes are taking aim at one another.

Paul Craig Roberts Tells James Corbett: Washington Is Leading Us To World World 3

Reflections on the Current State of Global War One

We have crossed the threshold of Global War One. There's no turning back. While the war has not been officially declared, the fact of the matter is that it has already begun and it's now too late to prevent it. It's  Déjà Vue. The world is in a time warp and we are de-evolving and repeating the horrors of the past 100 years. It's time to take stock of where we are presently and reflect upon how we got here. Most importantly, solutions and strategies how to survive the coming cataclysms.

WSWS Confirms Warning Of Impending Turkey-Led NATO Attack On Syria

Editor's note:  On Thursday August 4 Adventures of Der Kosmonaut published a "Propaganda Warning" regarding events in Syria and how they were depicted in the international media. This blog wrote:
"What is being set up is a military invasion under the bogus guise of "humanitarian intervention". Expect to see NATO with Turkey placed at the head to launch a naval blockade, missile strikes and bombing raids against Syria." (Emphasis added)
The following article from today's edition of World Socialist Website confirms the warning and vindicates the analysis made by this blog.

By Niall Green
15 August 2011

The United States, the European imperialist powers, and their NATO ally, Turkey, are preparing for possible military action against Syria.
Turkey’s foreign minister reportedly presented a letter from Turkish President Abdullah Gul to President Bashar Assad of Syria on Tuesday as an “ultimatum.” In the letter, Gul is believed to have warned his Syrian counterpart that Turkey would consider participating in an international intervention force.

Youth Uprisings Occuring In The United States

Editor's note. The following paragraphs were lifted from today's edition of World Socialist Website (Notes on the social crisis in America). One must seriously ponder why these incidents have not been reported in the international media.

Philadelphia imposes youth curfew to prevent “flash mobs”

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter announced Monday a curfew of 9pm on Friday and Saturday nights for any resident under the age of 18. The curfew affects the Center City and University City neighborhoods, where youth have congregated in “flash mobs” organized via social networking tools and text messaging. “If you want to act like an idiot—move,” Nutter said, saying that parents of youth caught outdoors past curfew would be fined $500 or charged with child neglect.
Instances of violence, looting and vandalism committed by large groups of mostly young people have been on the rise in the US over the summer. On June 23, a group convened in the Upper Darby suburb of Philadelphia and looted a Sears store. In the Shaker Heights neighborhood of Cleveland a July 4 event ended in a brawl after 1,000 teenagers responded to a flash-mob text message.

Youth Rebellions From Salford to Santiago

Police in the Chilean capital Santiago fired water cannons and tear gas on Thursday to disperse hundreds of student protesters calling for education reforms, and detained at least 130 people.
Students in Chile want the national government to take over the public school system, where 90 per cent of the country's 3.5 million students are educated. The students say the system is underfunded and deeply inequitable.

"A Declaration of War on the Poor": Cornel West and Tavis Smiley on the Debt Ceiling Agreement

Smiley Culture-Police Officer

One of Britain's first Reggae successes, Smiley Culture was killed during a police raid on his home this past March 15. The police have made the ludicrous claim that Smiley stabbed himself in the heart. This video from 1985 recounts how he had been harassed by the police repeatedly, even though he had become famous with his first hit, Cockney Translation. Sadly, nothing has changed in Britain over the past 25 years. Hence the reason why Britain today is witnessing the same uprisings as back then.

Linton Kwesi Johnson-Making History

London Burning

The UK is in the midst of the biggest civil unrest since the Brixton Riots of 1981. Then as now the origins of the unrest are the same: Racism, police brutality, unemployment and economic dislocation. Then as now, there is a Conservative government imposing savage social spending cuts which disporpotionately affects working class and poor people. Then as now, the trigger to the uprising is racially trageted police actions.

Ruin-Nation: The Obama Catastrophe

Wed, 08/03/2011
By Glen Ford
Barack Obama finally got the grand, bipartisan consensus he’s been working towards for two and a half years. His implacable, deep-seated hostility to the left half of the Democratic Party (“retarded,” said his boy, Rahm Emanuel) – which includes most of the Congressional Black Caucus – transformed a 2008 popular mandate for progressive change into its opposite: a de facto center-right governing coalition of Republicans, rightwing Democrats and Obama’s Executive Branch arrayed against roughly half the Democrats (on a very good day) in the House of Representatives, plus a handful of liberal Senators.
Obama’s unrelenting hostility to “entitlements,” which he vowed to put “on the table” for cutting two weeks before taking the oath of office in January, 2009, came to fruition this week, setting in motion a rolling implosion of Roosevelt’s New Deal and Johnson’s Great Society. It is a monumental catastrophe, worthy of a Mt. Rushmore in reverse (say, deep in a guano-filled bat cave). History will, without doubt, lay this ruin of a nation at the doorstep of Obama, the corporate Democratic Trojan Horse whose complexional characteristics neutered, neutralized or outright made insane the bulk of Black America and most of those whites that pass as “progressives.”

PROPAGANDA WARNING!

There is currently a tried and tested propaganda offensive being launched against Syria. This is the exact same playbook used against Serbia during the Yugoslav civil war and most recently Libya.
All the media reports about "gross human rights violations" happening in Syria along with "eyewitness" accounts should be taken with a grain of salt. Amnesty International is calling for sanctions, arms embargo and indictments against Assad and the regime at the International Criminal Court.
What is being set up is a military invasion under the bogus guise of "humanitarian intervention". Expect to see NATO with Turkey placed at the head to launch a naval blockade, missile strikes and bombing raids against Syria. Israel badly needs a war to put a lid on mass strikes and demos taking place within the country presently. In fact, Netanyahu had told the cabinet that a new "security issue" is needed for his government to survive!
Be aware! Any sanctions and calls for foreign intervention in Syria will edge the planet ever closer to Global War.

Egyptian Military Junta Attacks Sit-in on Tahrir Square

By Johannes Stern
On August 1 the Egyptian military and the notorious Amn al-Markazi (Central Security Forces) brutally attacked peaceful protesters on Tahrir Square in Cairo, clearing the Square and bringing the protests to a halt. At around 2 p.m., armored trucks moved to the entrances of the square and the military began to fire warning shots into the air.

Tahrir Square had been largely deserted by protest groups and official “opposition” parties, who abandoned the sit-in on Friday. Those who remained on the square were largely families and supporters of martyrs—that is, protesters killed during the revolutionary struggles that led to the ousting of US-backed President Hosni Mubarak, on February 11.

Lift Every Voice and Sing

Written by James Weldon Johnson. Music by John Rosamond Johnson. It was also known as the Black National (American) Anthem. In these uncertain and dark times, it is important to keep the light glowing and the vibes of positive energy. This song got Black Americans through the worst periods of Jim Crow Segregation, lynchings and wholescale human rights violations. Presently, the vast majority of the peoples of the world are facing similiar and in many ways much worse indignities than Blacks faced during most of the 20th Century. Text followed by video perfomance from Metropolitan Baptist Church, USA
