Harper Government Set To Implement a Police State In Canada

By Ed Patrick
The Conservatives’ law-and-order campaign has deeply reactionary political and ideological motivations that go far beyond the common media refrain that Prime Minister Harper is pandering to the religious social conservatives who constitute an important part of the party’s activist base.
The thrust of the Conservatives’ criminal justice policy is the repudiation of any notion that crime is rooted in poverty and other social ills and the resurrection of pre-Enlightment views of crime as a product of personal evil and original sin. Likewise, the Conservatives and the bourgeois establishment as a whole more and more present unemployment and all the other social injustices of capitalism as the product of individual failings.

Why I´m Suing Barack Obama

By Chris Hedges
From Truthdig
16 January 2012

Attorneys Carl J. Mayer and Bruce I. Afran filed a complaint Friday in the Southern U.S. District Court in New York City on my behalf as a plaintiff against Barack Obama and Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta to challenge the legality of the Authorization for Use of Military Force as embedded in the latest version of the National Defense Authorization Act, signed by the president Dec. 31.

The Geopolitical Stakes in Nigeria: The Curious Role of the IMF

International Monetary Fund’s Managing Director Christine Lagarde (C) sits between Nigerian Central Bank Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi (L) and Nigeria’s Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala during a joint press conference December 20, 2011 in Lagos, Nigeria.

By F. William Engdahl
The recent strikes protesting the government’s abrupt elimination of gasoline and other fuel subsidies, that brought Nigeria briefly to a standstill, came as a surprise to most in the country. Months earlier President Jonathan had promised the major trade union organizations that he would conduct a gradual four-stage lifting of the subsidy to ease the economic burden. Instead, without warning he announced an immediate full removal of subsidies effective January 1, 2012. It was “shock therapy” to put it mildly.
Nigeria today is one of the world’s most important producers of light, sweet crude oil—the same high quality crude oil that Libya and the British North Sea produce. The country is showing every indication of spiraling downward into deep disorder. Nigeria is the fifth largest supplier of oil to the United States and twelfth largest oil producer in the world on a par with Kuwait and just behind Venezuela with production exceeding two million barrels a day. [1]

"Snowed in in Seattle": A Plea for Peace to the White House

From Global Research
By Cynthia McKinney

Most people know about being "Sleepless in Seattle."  Well, I am "snowed in in Seattle!"  But even six inches of snow in Seattle don't keep me from becoming steamed when I read the latest news reports on the activities of the U.S. war machine:
At a time when U.S.-Iran tensions are the highest I have experienced in my lifetime, Danger Room of wired.com breaks a news story on 19 January 2012 that a new United States commando special operations team is operating near Iran.  Meanwhile, a columnist in Lebanon's "The Daily Star" newspaper writes that Syria increasingly looks like Libya.  And at the same time, U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta admits in a press conference that he believes that the annual number of sexual assaults in the U.S. military could number as high as 19,000.  This is from the Administration that shamefully accused the Libyan Jahamiriya military of issuing Viagra to its soldiers and using rape as a weapon.  And finally, coming hot on the heels of an Algeria-ISP report that that the Obama Administration offered to reconstitute the Libyan military, forming desert troops, special forces, and a Libyan air force, tunisiefocus.com reports reports that U.S. troops are already in Libya, in Brega, Ras Lanouf, and Sirte, in order to secure Libyan oil for western markets at a very cheap price.  Further, these reports indicate that US troops are at Mitiga Air Base east of Tripoli and that NATO helicopters and war planes fly over Libyan towns, surveilling everything including parties held by Libyans (http://www.algeria-isp.com/videos/politique-libye/201201-V1682/libye-video-voir-helicoptere-otan-janvier-2012.html) and that drones launched from a secret base in the Libyan desert surveille Libya and neighboring countries:  http://www.algeria-isp.com/actualites/politique-libye/201112-A7555/libye-une-base-militaire-secrete-americaine-francaise-libye-katroune-video-voir-decembre-2011.html.

Drowning In Hypocrisy: War Abroad, Austerity at Home

From Global Research
By Dr. Paul Craig Roberts

The US government is so full of self-righteousness that it has become a caricature of hypocrisy.  Leon Panetta, a former congressman who Obama appointed CIA director and now head of the Pentagon, just told the sailors on the USS Enterprise, an aircraft carrier, that the US is maintaining a fleet of 11 aircraft carriers in order to project sea power against Iran and to convince Iran that“it’s better for them to try to deal with us through diplomacy.”

If it requires 11 aircraft carriers to deal with Iran, how many will Panetta need to project power against Russia and China?  But to get on with the main point, Iran has been trying “to deal with us through diplomacy.”  The response from Washington has been belligerent threats of military attack, unfounded and irresponsible accusations that Iran is making a nuclear weapon, sanctions and an oil embargo. Washington’s accusations echo Israel’s and are contradicted by Washington’s own intelligence agencies and the International Atomic Energy Agency.  Why doesn’t Washington respond to Iran in a civilized manner with diplomacy?  Really, which of the two countries is the greatest threat to peace?

Australian Protesters Denounced As “Ugly Mob”

From World Socialist Website
By Mike Mead and Peter Symonds
The international media also promoted the Gillard “security scare.” The footage of Gillard losing her shoe and falling to the ground in the arms of a burly police agent provided good fodder for the 24-hour news networks. However, the coverage reflected something more politically significant—namely the widespread and growing feeling within ruling circles internationally that they are increasingly under siege and vulnerable to the mass opposition against their regressive economic and social policies.

Racist Zionist Calls For Assassination of President Obama

Editor's note: Again and again, the racist nature of North American Jewish Zionists is revealed. In the name of protecting Isarel and fighting "anti-Semetism", North American and Israeli Zionist Jews resort to the crudest and base form of racism. Imagine if the editor of Black Agenda Report called for the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu in order to free Palestinians from the genocidal policies of the Israeli state or due to the racist treatment of Africans in Israel. The Jewish lobby would have the BAR shut down, Glen Ford would have been denounced and most likely indicted for "inciting terrorism". Imagine if anyone had published an article stating that Bush should have been assassinated? No matter. In the name of "The HolocaustTM"Zionist Jews are able to get away with literal murder.

From Haaretz

The owner and publisher of the Atlanta Jewish Times, Andrew Adler, who suggested Israel should assassinate U.S. President Barack Obama, has resigned from his post, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported on Monday.
Adler, who has since apologized for his article, listed three options for Israel to counter Iran’s nuclear weapons in an article published in his newspaper last Friday. The first is to launch a pre-emptive strike against Hamas and Hezbollah, the second is to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities and the third is to “give the go-ahead for U.S.-based Mossad agents to take out a president deemed unfriendly to Israel in order for the current vice president to take his place and forcefully dictate that the United States’ policy includes its helping the Jewish state obliterate its enemies.”

Of Idiots and Sages

By Mumia Abul-Jamal
11 Jan. 2012

How much is your child worth?
How much is your grandchild worth?
These are not trick questions.  They arise from the news that North Carolina recently announced cash compensation to thousands of survivors of their State sterilization program that ran from 1929 to 1974 ~ an astonishing 45 years!
North Carolina was but one of many mostly Southern states that sterilized people whom it considered as ‘defective’.  In this, they were supported by authorities as august as the U.S. Supreme Court, which, in its now-infamous Buck vs. Bell (1927) decision, found that a state could properly sterilize its citizens, and citizens had no constitutional right to oppose it, for, in the words of Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes: “Three generations of imbeciles are enough!”

Ten Steps for Radical Revolution in USA

By Bill Quigley
From Black Agenda Report

I am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 1967

One. Human rights must be taken absolutely seriously. Every single person is entitled to dignity and human rights. No application needed. No exclusions at all. This is our highest priority.
Two. We must radically reinvent contemporary democracy. Current systems are deeply corrupt and not responsive to the needs of people. Representatives chosen by money and influence govern by money and influence. This is unacceptable. Direct democracy by the people is now technologically possible and should be the ruleCommunities must be protected whenever they advocate for self-determination, self-development and human rights. Dissent is essential to democracy; we pledge to help it flourish.
Three. Corporations are not people and are not entitled to human rights. Amend the US Constitution so it is clear corporations do not have constitutional or human rights. We the people must cut them down to size and so democracy can regulate their size, scope and actions.

Social and Political Crisis Hangs Over World Economic Forum in Davos

By Nick Beams
Taken as a whole, the WEF report amounts to an admission by the ruling elites that they have lost the right to rule, that the political and economic order over which they preside has no legitimacy in the eyes of masses of people the world over, and that it holds nothing for the future of humanity except a social, economic and ecological nightmare.
But that does not mean that the ruling elite and its irrational and destructive economic and political order are going to bow out and fade away peacefully into the good night. History is not determined by rationality, but by the class struggle. Even as their historical bankruptcy becomes increasingly apparent, the ruling economic and political elites as well as their ideologists in the media and academia, now gathered in Davos, will fight ever more viciously to maintain their position against growing social opposition.

The Crisis of Education in America: "How to Become a Serf"

How to Become a Serf
Man is a pathetic creature; a brute trying to be god but traveling in the wrong direction.
Educational systems now train workers to fulfill the needs of companies. A society in which people exist for the sake of companies is a society enslaved. But there's a deep problem with the notion that education should equal vocational training. To paraphrase a very famous and renowned person, man does not live by work alone. Indeed, the knowledge and skills needed to earn a living in a capitalist industrial economy are of little use in human relationships, and human relationships are the core of everyone's life. Schools devoted to vocational training provide no venue for teaching cultural differences, for trying to understand the person who lives next door or in another country. Value systems are never evaluated; alternatives are never considered. As a result, although we all live on the same planet, we do not live together. At best, we only live side by side. At worst, we live to kill each other. Education as vocational training reduces everything to ideology, our devotion to which causes us to reject the stark reality that stares us in the face, because our ideologies color the realities we see and people never get wiser than those of previous generations. People have become nothing but the monkeys of hurdy gurdy grinders, tethered to grinders' organs with tin cups in hands to be filled for the benefit of the grinders. And this is the species we refer to as sapient. What a delusion!

Count Ossie & Mystic Revelation of Rastafari - Poem

Ever since I was a youth
I've always been searching for the truth
Having been told so many lies
Life like good music never dies

So the question is posed
Only who will ever know
Why is a man respected when he's dead?
Shouldn't that respect be paid to the living instead?

Alive a man is a sufferer of no mean order
But dead he has an estate to the value of a million in gold
I must die one day you all hear people say
Yet praying for salvation in corrupted meditation

Storing up wealth
Ignoring their health
But the tree is known by its fruit
There's no life in lying calling it the truth

The Torture of Mumia Abu-Jamal Continues off Death Row

By Hans Bennett

On December 7, following the U.S. Supreme Court's refusal to consider the Philadelphia District Attorney's final avenue of appeal, current DA Seth Williams announced that he would no longer be seeking a death sentence for the world-renowned death row journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal – on death row following his conviction at a 1982 trial deemed unfair by Amnesty International, the European Parliament, the Japanese Diet, Nelson Mandela, and many others. Abu-Jamal's sentence of execution was first “overturned” by a federal court in December 2001, and during the next ten years, he was never transferred from death row at the level five supermax prison, SCI Greene, in rural western Pennsylvania.
Shortly after the DA's announcement in early December, Mumia Abu-Jamal, now 57 years old, was transferred to SCI Mahanoy in Frackville, PA, 100 miles from Philadelphia. Once there, it was expected that he would be released from solitary confinement and transferred into general population where he would finally have contact visits and generally less onerous conditions. However, he was immediately placed in “Administrative Custody,” in SCI Mahanoy's “Restrictive Housing Unit” where his conditions of isolation and repression are now in many ways more extreme than they were on death row.

The World War on Democracy

From Global Research
By John Pilger

Lisette Talate died the other day. I remember a wiry, fiercely intelligent woman who masked her grief with a determination that was a presence. She was the embodiment of people’s resistance to the war on democracy. I first glimpsed her in a 1950s Colonial Office film about the Chagos islanders, a tiny creole nation living midway between Africa and Asia in the Indian Ocean. The camera panned across thriving villages, a church, a school, a hospital, set in a phenomenon of natural beauty and peace. Lisette remembers the producer saying to her and her teenage friends, "Keep smiling girls!"
Sitting in her kitchen in Mauritius many years later, she said, "I didn’t have to be told to smile. I was a happy child, because my roots were deep in the islands, my paradise. My great-grandmother was born there; I made six children there. That’s why they couldn’t legally throw us out of our own homes; they had to terrify us into leaving or force us out. At first, they tried to starve us. The food ships stopped arriving [then] they spread rumours we would be bombed, then they turned on our dogs."
In the early 1960s, the Labour government of Harold Wilson secretly agreed to a demand from Washington that the Chagos archipelago, a British colony, be "swept" and "sanitised" of its 2,500 inhabitants so that a military base could be built on the principal island, Diego Garcia. "They knew we were inseparable from our pets," said Lisette, "When the American soldiers arrived to build the base, they backed their big trucks against the brick shed where we prepared the coconuts; hundreds of our dogs had been rounded up and imprisoned there. Then they gassed them through tubes from the trucks’ exhausts. You could hear them crying."

New Jersey Drive

Anarchism and the Black Revolution

Editor's note: The following article was written by former Black Panther and political prisoner Lorenzo Komboa Ervin. Ervin is one of the few Blacks in the American Anarchist movement. This pamphlet was originally published in 1978. This is the second edition of the text Anarchism and the Black Revolution from 1993. Some of the issues he addresses are dated. He certainly could not have foreseen the rise and ascension of Barack Obama to the White House. In 1993, no one could have imagined that the American capitalist state would elevate a reactionary right wing Black Democrat to the post of US President.
Nevertheless, Ervin's writings are still applicable today. They are most salient when dealing with the Occupy Wall Street movement. While Blacks and Latinos find their voices and interests marginalised, or in some cases, taken over by the predominately white-led movement, Ervin directly criticises the racial blindness of white activists. In this pamphlet, Ervin directly addresses white American anarchists and other so-called "anti-capitalist" "revolutionaries." The bulk of the pamphlet is to introduce Anarchism to the Black American masses and propose radical and revolutionary methods to advance and ultimately achieve Black Liberation.
This blog neither endorses Anarchism nor the politically and intellectually weak analysis and solutions presented by Ervin in particular and Anarchism in general. This blog takes the perspective of Leon Trotsky's description of Anarchism as an ideology of "political disintegration". Still, Ervin is a radical Black political voice who is ignored and excluded in the public discussion of totalitarian capitalism and the sharpening racial oppression taking place both in North America and globally. His ideas and solutions are worth reading and debating.

From libcom.org
By Lorenzo Komboa Ervin

An Analysis of white supremacy
This pamphlet will briefly discuss the nature of Anarchism and its relevance to the Black Liberation movement. Because there have been so many lies and distortions of what Anarchism really stands for, by both its left- and right-wing ideological opponents, it will be necessary to discuss the many popular myths about it. This in itself deserves a book, but is not the intention of this pamphlet, which is merely to introduce the Black movement to revolutionary Anarchist ideals. It is up to the reader to determine whether these new ideas are valid and worthy of adoption.
How the Capitalists Use Racism
The fate of the white working class has always been bound with the condition of Black workers. Going as far back as the American colonial period when Black labour was first imported into America, Black slaves and indentured servants have been oppressed right along with whites of the lower classes. But when European indentured servants joined with Blacks to rebel against their lot in the late 1600s, the propertied class decided to "free" them by giving them a special status as "whites" and thus a stake in the system of oppression.

IRAN: US/Israeli False Flag Attack May Be Underway

From Veterans Today
By Jim Fetzer and Joshua Blakeney

Several warnings of an imminent “false flag” attack by the Israeli-influenced United States on one of its own warships, which will be attributed to Iran, have been reported by several reliable sources. In recent years “false-flag” terrorism has been utilized multiple times by US and Israeli political actors to provide pretexts for otherwise unjustifiable, anti-Islamic military excursions. The plan is to justify an all-out assault on Iran based upon a new fabricated “Pearl Harbor”.

Israel is the primary motivator behind the attempts to destabilize Iran. US traditional foreign policy was one of attempting to foster stability in the Middle East for oil markets. The Zionist impulse, conversely, is to destabilize all potential regional hegemons and carve the Middle East up into ethno-religious statelets. Thus, since the fraudulent events of 9/11, we’ve seen a policy of Middle East disintegration being pursued by Israeli-influenced American politicians. Indeed, recently released CIA memos reveal that Mossad agents have been posing as CIA agents and conscripting anti-Iranian terrorists.

World Countdown-Five Minutes Before Midnight: Iran

From Global Research
by Felicity Arbuthnot

Editor's Note: It's taken only two months for the Doomsday Clock to move one minute ahead.

"I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad-Gita … “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." (J. Robert Oppenheimer, 22nd April 1904 - 18th February 1967, Scientific Director of the Manhattan Project, on the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

Chilling ironies surely do not come much greater than the Nobel Peace Prize winning President of the United States, in an election year, having contributed to global instability and the possibility of nuclear conflict, to such an extent that the “Doomsday Clock”, maintained by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists at the University of Chicago, has this week been moved to five minutes to midnight.

The forward-creeping hands of the symbolic clock, maintained since 1947, two years after the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, indicate the closest to global catastrophe in twenty six years, with the exception of 2007, when the hands were similarly set under the gung-ho “Bring ‘em on”, Presidency of George W. Bush.

Iran’s Green Opposition Endorses Imperialist Intervention in Syria

Editor's note: It was obvious from the start that the so-called Green movement in Iran was nothing less than a pro-American and pro-imperialist ragtag of right wing petit-bourgeois social layers. Naturally, Western liberals enthusiastically supported this fake "democracy revolution". Now they're back this time supporting the blatantly Western backed terrorists of the Syrian "opposition." I'm personally familiar with these right wing Iranian social layers. The owner of The Age of Nepotism is one of them.
From World Socialist Website
By Sahand Avedis

One of the prominent Green figures calling for Western military intervention in Syria is the former secretary of the Islamic Student Association (Tahkim Vahdat), Ali Afshari. Afshari was brought to the US in 2004 and in 2006, as a representative of the student movement in Iran; he spoke at a panel discussion organized by Senators Rick Santorum and Joe Lieberman at the US Capitol. He regularly publishes articles on web sites and online news agencies affiliated with the Greens, particularly those run by “liberal” student groups, and appears in Voice of America’s Persian-language programs.

In October he wrote an article titled “Libya and Humanitarian Intervention,” dismissing oil as a factor in NATO’s war against Libya. Advancing the absurd claim that a market-based global economy leaves no place for colonialist policies, he welcomed more such wars to come. He wrote that he was hopeful that improved tactics would “lead to perfection of humanitarian intervention in future instances”.

The Identity Question Or Why I'm Neither African Nor African-American

By Der Kosmonaut
12 Janurary 2012

The most common and vexing question I'm often asked in Europe is: “Where are you from?”
The exchanges are predictable. I truthfully reply that I'm from New York. However, rather than leaving it alone, people will press the question: “Where are you really from?”
This line of questioning is based on racism and ignorance of the history of the Americas.
When I lived in Montreal, I told a colleague of mine at CKUT radio a bit of my family history and she came up with a wonderful idea of a documentary entitled "A D.... History of the
United States". She came up with this title because my family history is really reflective of the
United States.

Australian social commentator Max Igan espouses on the psychological, social and economic foundations of contemporary global totalitarian capitalism. Igan says that the capitalist rule rests exclusively on fear.
As a pacifist, Igan believes in non-violent and non-compliance against the present order. Igan has a Christ-like compassion for the oppressors and wishes them no ill will. Iran Fights Back

By Margaret Kimberley
It is a good thing for people all over the world that Iran feels confident enough to threaten resistance to United States aggression. In the uni-polar world, that is to say one controlled by American interests, the only salvation for humanity is the ability and willingness of nations to push back against imperialism’s dictates.
The signs that Iran will be a new target for the U.S. are ominous and unmistakable. The propaganda campaign against it is growing, with constant and false claims that Iran is a danger to the world and on the verge of producing nuclear weapons.
Nevertheless, it would be a mistake to think that the United States will always have the last word. Iran is not a powerless nation, it isn’t Iraq or Libya and it is clearly stating that it will put up a fight if the threats become real. If the United States pressures the states of the European Union to impose an embargo on the importation of Iranian crude oil, Iran has said that it will block the Straits of Hormuz, bringing the transportation of all Persian gulf oil to a standstill.

Police Attack Peaceful Anti-Racist Protesters in Germany

By Martin Kreickenbaum

Police intervened violently last Saturday to break up a demonstration in the east German city of Dessau. More than 200 people had gathered to commemorate Oury Jalloh, an asylum seeker from Sierra Leone who burned to death in a Dessau police cell seven years ago. Thirty demonstrators were injured, some seriously, including Mouctar Bah, the founder of the “Initiative in Memory of Oury Jalloh,” who had officially organised the protest march. The protesters were demanding an explanation of the circumstances of Oury’s death.
Large numbers of police in full riot gear surrounded the 240 protesters at the start of their protest march. The police objected to a poster with the slogan “Oury Jalloh—it was murder” and sought to confiscate banners and poster for alleged “defamation”. A woman who painted the slogan on the asphalt with chalk was beaten.

New Military Detention Powers Threaten Basic Rights

Regime Change in the Russian Federation? Why Washington Wants ‘Finito’ with Vladimir Putin

By F. William Engdahl

Washington clearly wants ‘finito’ with Russia’s Putin as in basta! or as they said in Egypt last spring, Kefaya--enough!.  Hillary Clinton and friends have apparently decided Russia’s prospective next president, Vladimir Putin, is a major obstacle to their plans. Few however understand why. Russia today, in tandem with China and to a significant degree Iran, form the spine, however shaky, of the only effective global axis of resistance to a world dominated by one sole superpower.

On December 8 several days after election results for Russia’s parliamentary elections were announced, showing a sharp drop in popularity for Prime Minister Putin’s United Russia party, Putin accused the United States and specifically Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of fuelling the Russian opposition protesters and their election protests. Putin stated, “The (US) Secretary of State was quick to evaluate the elections, saying that they are unfair and unjust even before she received materials from the Office of Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (the OSCE international election monitors-w.e.) observers.”[1]

Putin went on to claim that Clinton’s premature comments were the necessary signal to the waiting opposition groups that the US Government would back their protests. Clinton’s comments, the seasoned Russian intelligence pro stated, became a “signal for our activists who began active work with the US Department of State.” [2]
