Sister Souljah-Blacks Worldwide Are In A State of War

In this address delivered in early 1991 during the First Persian Gulf War, Sister Souljah lays out the political and social reality confronting Blacks in the United States. She explains the psychological state of oppression that Blacks experience in "post-modern" American society. Sister Souljah claims that Blacks worldwide are in a constant state of war against racism and white supremacy. She posits revolutionary strategies for Black liberation. She understands that the key to Black liberation is the develop a revolutionary consciousness that is independent from the dominate white structures of thought.

Her theory is that one of Black Nationalism and Black separatism. Sister Souljah's anger is understandable and even justified. However, today under conditions of extreme and genocidal totalitarian capitalism, humankind must be united against the common capitalist oppressor. Today racial genocide is presided over by a Black man and woman who occupy the White House.

Nevertheless, her message is an important wake up call for Black Americans who think they have achieved freedom with the elevation of Barack Obama as president. Indeed, her message is even more urgent today than when it was delivered more than 20 years ago.

The recent strikes protesting the government’s abrupt elimination of gasoline and other fuel subsidies, that brought Nigeria briefly to a standstill, came as a surprise to most in the country. Months earlier President Jonathan had promised the major trade union organizations that he would conduct a gradual four-stage lifting of the subsidy to ease the economic burden. Instead, without warning he announced an immediate full removal of subsidies effective January 1, 2012. It was “shock therapy” to put it mildly.

Nigeria today is one of the world’s most important producers of light, sweet crude oil—the same high quality crude oil that Libya and the British North Sea produce. The country is showing every indication of spiraling downward into deep disorder. Nigeria is the fifth largest supplier of oil to the United States and twelfth largest oil producer in the world on a par with Kuwait and just behind Venezuela with production exceeding two million barrels a day. And at the same time, U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta admits in a press conference that he believes that the annual number of sexual assaults in the U.S. military could number as high as 19,000. This is from the Administration that shamefully accused the Libyan Jahamiriya military of issuing Viagra to its soldiers and using rape as a weapon. And finally, coming hot on the heels of an Algeria-ISP report that that the Obama Administration offered to reconstitute the Libyan military, forming desert troops, special forces, and a Libyan air force, tunisiefocus.com reports reports that U.S. troops are already in Libya, in Brega, Ras Lanouf, and Sirte, in order to secure Libyan oil for western markets at a very cheap price. The US government is so full of self-righteousness that it has become a caricature of hypocrisy. Leon Panetta, a former congressman who Obama appointed CIA director and now head of the Pentagon, just told the sailors on the USS Enterprise, an aircraft carrier, that the US is maintaining a fleet of 11 aircraft carriers in order to project sea power against Iran and to convince Iran that“it’s better for them to try to deal with us through diplomacy.”

If it requires 11 aircraft carriers to deal with Iran, how many will Panetta need to project power against Russia and China? But to get on with the main point, Iran has been trying “to deal with us through diplomacy.” The response from Washington has been belligerent threats of military attack, unfounded and irresponsible accusations that Iran is making a nuclear weapon, sanctions and an oil embargo. Washington’s accusations echo Israel’s and are contradicted by Washington’s own intelligence agencies and the International Atomic Energy Agency. Why doesn’t Washington respond to Iran in a civilized manner with diplomacy? Really, which of the two countries is the greatest threat to peace?

Man is a pathetic creature; a brute trying to be god but traveling in the wrong direction.

Educational systems now train workers to fulfill the needs of companies. A society in which people exist for the sake of companies is a society enslaved. But there's a deep problem with the notion that education should equal vocational training. To paraphrase a very famous and renowned person, man does not live by work alone. Indeed, the knowledge and skills needed to earn a living in a capitalist industrial economy are of little use in human relationships, and human relationships are the core of everyone's life. Schools devoted to vocational training provide no venue for teaching cultural differences, for trying to understand the person who lives next door or in another country. Value systems are never evaluated; alternatives are never considered. As a result, although we all live on the same planet, we do not live together. At best, we only live side by side. At worst, we live to kill each other. Education as vocational training reduces everything to ideology, our devotion to which causes us to reject the stark reality that stares us in the face, because our ideologies color the realities we see and people never get wiser than those of previous generations. People have become nothing but the monkeys of hurdy gurdy grinders, tethered to grinders' organs with tin cups in hands to be filled for the benefit of the grinders. And this is the species we refer to as sapient. What a delusion!

On December 7, following the U.S. Supreme Court's refusal to consider the Philadelphia District Attorney's final avenue of appeal, current DA Seth Williams announced that he would no longer be seeking a death sentence for the world-renowned death row journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal – on death row following his conviction at a 1982 trial deemed unfair by Amnesty International, the European Parliament, the Japanese Diet, Nelson Mandela, and many others. Abu-Jamal's sentence of execution was first “overturned” by a federal court in December 2001, and during the next ten years, he was never transferred from death row at the level five supermax prison, SCI Greene, in rural western Pennsylvania.

Shortly after the DA's announcement in early December, Mumia Abu-Jamal, now 57 years old, was transferred to SCI Mahanoy in Frackville, PA, 100 miles from Philadelphia. Once there, it was expected that he would be released from solitary confinement and transferred into general population where he would finally have contact visits and generally less onerous conditions. However, he was immediately placed in “Administrative Custody,” in SCI Mahanoy's “Restrictive Housing Unit” where his conditions of isolation and repression are now in many ways more extreme than they were on death row.

Lisette Talate died the other day. I remember a wiry, fiercely intelligent woman who masked her grief with a determination that was a presence. She was the embodiment of people’s resistance to the war on democracy. I first glimpsed her in a 1950s Colonial Office film about the Chagos islanders, a tiny creole nation living midway between Africa and Asia in the Indian Ocean. The camera panned across thriving villages, a church, a school, a hospital, set in a phenomenon of natural beauty and peace. Lisette remembers the producer saying to her and her teenage friends, "Keep smiling girls!"

Sitting in her kitchen in Mauritius many years later, she said, "I didn’t have to be told to smile. I was a happy child, because my roots were deep in the islands, my paradise. My great-grandmother was born there; I made six children there. That’s why they couldn’t legally throw us out of our own homes; they had to terrify us into leaving or force us out. At first, they tried to starve us. The food ships stopped arriving [then] they spread rumours we would be bombed, then they turned on our dogs."

In the early 1960s, the Labour government of Harold Wilson secretly agreed to a demand from Washington that the Chagos archipelago, a British colony, be "swept" and "sanitised" of its 2,500 inhabitants so that a military base could be built on the principal island, Diego Garcia. "They knew we were inseparable from our pets," said Lisette, "When the American soldiers arrived to build the base, they backed their big trucks against the brick shed where we prepared the coconuts; hundreds of our dogs had been rounded up and imprisoned there. Then they gassed them through tubes from the trucks’ exhausts. You could hear them crying."

Editor's note: The following article was written by former Black Panther and political prisoner Lorenzo Komboa Ervin. Ervin is one of the few Blacks in the American Anarchist movement. This pamphlet was originally published in 1978. This is the second edition of the text Anarchism and the Black Revolution from 1993. Some of the issues he addresses are dated. He certainly could not have foreseen the rise and ascension of Barack Obama to the White House. In 1993, no one could have imagined that the American capitalist state would elevate a reactionary right wing Black Democrat to the post of US President.
Nevertheless, Ervin's writings are still applicable today. They are most salient when dealing with the Occupy Wall Street movement. While Blacks and Latinos find their voices and interests marginalised, or in some cases, taken over by the predominately white-led movement, Ervin directly criticises the racial blindness of white activists. In this pamphlet, Ervin directly addresses white American anarchists and other so-called "anti-capitalist" "revolutionaries." The bulk of the pamphlet is to introduce Anarchism to the Black American masses and propose radical and revolutionary methods to advance and ultimately achieve Black Liberation.
This blog neither endorses Anarchism nor the politically and intellectually weak analysis and solutions presented by Ervin in particular and Anarchism in general. This blog takes the perspective of Leon Trotsky's description of Anarchism as an ideology of "political disintegration". Still, Ervin is a radical Black political voice who is ignored and excluded in the public discussion of totalitarian capitalism and the sharpening racial oppression taking place both in North America and globally. His ideas and solutions are worth reading and debating.

One of the prominent Green figures calling for Western military intervention in Syria is the former secretary of the Islamic Student Association (Tahkim Vahdat), Ali Afshari. Afshari was brought to the US in 2004 and in 2006, as a representative of the student movement in Iran; he spoke at a panel discussion organized by Senators Rick Santorum and Joe Lieberman at the US Capitol. He regularly publishes articles on web sites and online news agencies affiliated with the Greens, particularly those run by “liberal” student groups, and appears in Voice of America’s Persian-language programs.

In October he wrote an article titled “Libya and Humanitarian Intervention,” dismissing oil as a factor in NATO’s war against Libya. Advancing the absurd claim that a market-based global economy leaves no place for colonialist policies, he welcomed more such wars to come. He wrote that he was hopeful that improved tactics would “lead to perfection of humanitarian intervention in future instances”.

Police intervened violently last Saturday to break up a demonstration in the east German city of Dessau. More than 200 people had gathered to commemorate Oury Jalloh, an asylum seeker from Sierra Leone who burned to death in a Dessau police cell seven years ago. Thirty demonstrators were injured, some seriously, including Mouctar Bah, the founder of the “Initiative in Memory of Oury Jalloh,” who had officially organised the protest march. The protesters were demanding an explanation of the circumstances of Oury’s death.

Large numbers of police in full riot gear surrounded the 240 protesters at the start of their protest march. The police objected to a poster with the slogan “Oury Jalloh—it was murder” and sought to confiscate banners and poster for alleged “defamation”. A woman who painted the slogan on the asphalt with chalk was beaten.

Putin stated, “The (US) Secretary of State was quick to evaluate the elections, saying that they are unfair and unjust even before she received materials from the Office of Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (the OSCE international election monitors-w.e.) observers.”[1]

Putin went on to claim that Clinton’s premature comments were the necessary signal to the waiting opposition groups that the US Government would back their protests. Clinton’s comments, the seasoned Russian intelligence pro stated, became a “signal for our activists who began active work with the US Department of State.” [2]

A recent article by the Black American novelist Cecil Brown in the San Francisco Bay View newspaper was a startling read. Entitled "Race and Occupy Cal", the article focused on the November 15, 2011 demonstration by University of California students held in Berkeley. Aware of the racial tensions and the gulf separating mostly Upper Middle Class whites who are facing impoverishment from Black citizens, the organisers made a conscious attempt to insert the issue of race and racism into the discourse.

The article itself was appalling. The turgid prose employed by Brown was fitting for a first year university journalism student. However, Brown's writing style isn't as important as the frightening yet obviously unnoticed implications of the white domination over Black American Culture and Intellect. What is important is that the so-called academic field of "African-American Studies" has become practically a white dominated discipline with Black people themselves excluded and reduced to objects of study. What the article revealed was the return of colonial studies of Black Americans akin to the studies of plants and animals in the respective fields of Botany and Zoology.

The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council is investigating after a Quebec mayor called Israel an apartheid regime and a country that doesn’t deserve to exist on his French-language talk show.

Stéphane Gendron, host of Face à Face on V Television Network and mayor of Huntingdon, a small town 75 kilometres southwest of Montreal, made the comments on his show last month. He also said he supports a boycott of a store in Montreal that sells Israeli-made shoes.

Gendron declined to comment when contacted by the CBC, directing all questions to the network.

V Network spokeswoman Diane Patenaude said the point of Gendron's show is to provide strong opinions: "This program is neither a news telecast or a news magazine and its hosts are not journalists."

The network will meet with Gendron and the show in the next few days to discuss the situation, she said.

The CBSC has already received six complaints from Jewish rights groups over Gendron’s comments.

I'm writing this from a remote village in Southeastern Bavaria Germany. Actually, there's a limit to its remoteness. I'm sitting in an old cattle pen which has been converted into a house with limited and slow dial up Internet connection. The closest big city is Landshut which only has a population of 150,000. The next big town is a 15 minute drive away. There's no mobile phone service. If I need to communicate with the outside world there is a telephone landline available. I'm still in an advanced industrial country. There's a nuclear power plant about 20 miles away. My hosts have assured me that this house is sheltered in the event of a meltdown since the wind would blow the radiation away from here. It's fascinating how deluded people's thinking can be. Another indicator that I'm not isolated is the frequent sight and sounds of jets making their landing approaches to Salzburg airport.

Across the world, a dangerous rumor has spread that could have catastrophic implications. According to legend, Iran's President has threatened to destroy Israel, or, to quote the misquote, "Israel must be wiped off the map". Contrary to popular belief, this statement was never made, as the following article will prove.

BACKGROUND:

On Tuesday, October 25th, 2005 at the Ministry of Interior conference hall in Tehran, newly elected Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad delivered a speech at a program, reportedly attended by thousands, titled "The World Without Zionism". Large posters surrounding him displayed this title prominently in English, obviously for the benefit of the international press. Below the poster's title was a slick graphic depicting an hour glass containing planet Earth at its top. Two small round orbs representing the United States and Israel are shown falling through the hour glass' narrow neck and crashing to the bottom.

Before we get to the infamous remark, it's important to note that the "quote" in question was itself a quote— they are the words of the late Ayatollah Khomeini, the father of the Islamic Revolution. Although he quoted Khomeini to affirm his own position on Zionism, the actual words belong toKhomeini and not Ahmadinejad. Thus, Ahmadinejad has essentially been credited (or blamed) for a quote that is not only unoriginal, but represents a viewpoint already in place well before he ever took office.

THE ACTUAL QUOTE:

So what did Ahmadinejad actually say? To quote his exact words in farsi:

"Imam ghoft een rezhim-e ishghalgar-e qods bayad az safheh-ye ruzgar mahv shavad."

That passage will mean nothing to most people, but one word might ring a bell: rezhim-e. It is the word "Regime", pronounced just like the English word with an extra "eh" sound at the end. Ahmadinejad did not refer to Israel the country or Israel the land mass, but the Israeli regime. This is a vastly significant distinction, as one cannot wipe a regime off the map. Ahmadinejad does not even refer to Israel by name, he instead uses the specific phrase "rezhim-e ishghalgar-e qods" (regime occupying Jerusalem).

So this raises the question.. what exactly did he want "wiped from the map"? The answer is: nothing. That's because the word "map" was never used. The Persian word for map, "nagsheh", is not contained anywhere in his original farsi quote, or, for that matter, anywhere in his entire speech. Nor was the western phrase "wipe out" ever said. Yet we are led to believe that Iran's President threatened to "wipe Israel off the map", despite never having uttered the words "map", "wipe out" or even "Israel".

Salem's Lot is one of the scariest horror films ever produced. Made as a CBS TV movie, Salem's Lot shocked America when it was first broadcast in November 1979. Unlike the scores of vampire films which followed it, there's nothing sexy about the vampires in this film. Upon watching this film, any illusions or desires about wanting to become a vampire are extinguished.

Ben Mears (David Soul) is a successful writer who returns to his hometown of Jerusalem's Lot, Maine. Ever since he was a child, Mears has been haunted by the Marsten House which sits atop a hill overlooking the town casting a dark presence. The Marsten House, named after Hubie Marsten, had been vacant since Hubie killed his entire family decades in the past. Now however, the house has two new occupants Mr. Straker (James Mason) and the mysterious Mr. Barlow (Reggie Nadler). Straker and Barlow open an antiques shop in town.

A series of strange and diabolical events take place in town beginning with the disappearance of Danny Glick. A strange plague afflicts the residents of Salem's Lot one by one. 12 year old Mark Petrie (Lance Kerwin) is obsessed with horror and gore and a fan of the famous illusionist Harry Houdini. Mark becomes the first one to be aware of the presence of vampires in Salem's Lot. Petrie and Mears are drawn together in their confrontation with the vampires.

Salem's Lot disarms the viewer with its slow pace and never ending creeping intensity which hypnotises and lulls the viewer ever deeper into the plot. A few scenes are particularly unnerving, especially the confrontation between Father Callahan, a Catholic Priest and Kurt Barlow.

Salem's Lot does deviate from the original novel plot from Stephen King (Salem's Lot is now considered to be King's best literary work and deemed to be a classic), but considering the gruesome intensity of the novel, director Tobe Hooper did a remarkable and impressive effort in capturing the essence of the story. This is Hooper's best film for which he will be most remembered for, which is saying much with his rather impressive resume (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Poltergeist, Life Force).

There's something about elevators and stairwells in high-rise housing projects. If the walls could speak they'd tell a whole lot about what generations of poor Black families have had to endure. Not just the daily reality of living in substandard housing, but the whole way you're treated by the authorities, like you're somehow a criminal.

In Harlem some of the projects are over 20 stories high, with several thousand residents. Lack of adequate city services means basic repairs don't get made, trash cans are always overflowing, there's rat infestation. But it's not just this. Horrible and demeaning living conditions are just one part of what people here have to put up with.

There's another kind of infestation and invasion. Something way more dangerous to people's health. There is the constant knowledge that the housing authority, child services, and other government officials can come down on you at any time. There are the Viper cameras, installed in the entrances and hallways, which mean people are under constant surveillance. It feels a lot like prison. And then there's the POLICE—who serve as a frontline in a concerted and conscious effort by the powers-that-be to repress, control and contain a whole section of society. These armed men roam about, in ones and twos or in packs, sweating people on the streets and in the playgrounds. And for them, a favorite stalking ground is the housing projects where they target especially the youth.

Warnings from many experts are coming true: Libya is being pulled into a civil war. Now anti-Gaddafists are carving up power and Libya’s capital of Tripoli is already seeing clashes as the rebels are fighting for the local airport.

Libya that was united by one goal - to topple Gaddafi, is now on the verge of chaos. Late Saturday, the so-called Libya’s national guards attempted to seize control over the Tripoli airport and attacked their former allies from the city of Zintan. Their attempt failed but left some people killed and injured. The national guards pledged to try again and were calmed down only by the tribal elders.

At the same time, militants attempted to murder Libya’s Chief Commander Khalifa Haftar.

Right after Libya’s National Transitional Council announced the country’s liberation on October 23, Gaddafi’s supporters carried out several attacks. But the opposition hasn’t clashed with one another till recently. Experts say that they’re fighting for the helm. The rebels’ common enemy, Gaddafi, is dead and thus they have a new pretext to start showing who is stronger and who’ll get access to the country’s oil riches.
